Should you add lashes or lift the ones you have? It is the question we hear most in our Geneva studio, and there is no universal answer: the right choice depends far more on your natural lashes and your daily life than on trends. Lash extensions add synthetic fibres, one by one or in light fans, for length and density your lashes do not have on their own. A lash lift adds nothing at all: it curls your own lashes from the root so they look longer and more open. This guide compares the two honestly, explains what we look at when we examine your normal lashes, and helps you decide between lash extensions or a lash lift in Geneva before you book.
What each treatment actually is
Lash extensions are individual synthetic fibres bonded to your natural lashes with a professional adhesive. In a classic 1:1 set, one extension is placed on each natural lash. In Russian volume, several very fine extensions are grouped into a light fan and attached to one natural lash, for more density. Extensions follow the life of each natural lash: when a lash sheds, its extension goes with it, which is why sets are maintained with regular refills.
A lash lift is a semi-permanent treatment that curls your own lashes upward from the root with a silicone shield and a sequence of lotions. The result looks like freshly curled lashes, but lasts for weeks. A tint can be added to darken the lashes to the tips. Nothing is glued on, so there is nothing to maintain between appointments.
Both treatments are performed with your eyes closed, lying down, and both should be comfortable. Their logic is simply different: extensions add, a lift reveals.
Why your natural lash cycle matters

Whichever you choose, the result depends on the life of your normal lashes. Each lash grows, rests and sheds on its own schedule, and new lashes replace the old ones continuously. That is why a lift fades gradually rather than all at once, and why an extension set thins out over the weeks even when it was perfectly applied. It is also why neither treatment should weaken your lashes when done well: a lift should be repeated only once the previous one has grown out, and extensions should be weighted to what each natural lash can carry.
Who each one is for, and when to wait
The deciding factor is the condition of your normal lashes.
A lash lift suits you if:
- your lashes are reasonably long and full but grow straight or point downward;
- you want a natural "your eyes, but better" look;
- you have no time or wish for frequent appointments;
- you swim, do a lot of sport or spend time outdoors.
Extensions suit you if:
- your lashes are short, fine or sparse, and curling them would not show much;
- you want visible length, density or a darker lash line;
- you are happy to book a refill every two to four weeks and to follow a careful routine.
When to wait or ask your doctor first, whichever option you choose: an eye infection or inflammation that has not fully cleared, recent eye surgery, a known allergy to adhesives, hair dye or cosmetics, eczema around the eyes, or lashes that are currently damaged. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can make lift results less predictable, and you may prefer to discuss any treatment with your doctor first. Tell us about all of this during the consultation; if a treatment is not wise for you on that day, we will say so.
How to choose: the questions that decide
Before choosing, answer these questions honestly.
- What do your lashes look like without mascara? If they are long but straight, a lift will already transform them. If they are short or sparse, a lift will only curl what little is there, and extensions will give the result you have in mind.
- What look do you want on an ordinary Tuesday? A fresh, natural look points to a lift. A made-up look, visible even without eye make-up, points to extensions.
- How much time can you give it? A lift is one appointment every six to eight weeks. Extensions mean a refill every two to four weeks, plus daily care.
- What is your routine? Oily make-up removers, rubbing your eyes and sleeping face-down shorten the life of extensions. A lift is far less demanding.
- What is your budget over time? Compare the cost over two months, not just the first appointment (see the prices section below).
Still unsure? Our French guide to choosing your lash set compares the different extension styles in detail.
What we look at in your natural lashes
At the start of the appointment, before recommending anything, we examine four things:
- Length. A lift needs lashes long enough to wrap around the shield. Very short lashes will curl, but the difference may be modest.
- Density. Gaps along the lash line stay visible after a lift. Extensions can fill them, within what your lashes can carry.
- Direction and strength. Straight or downward lashes are ideal for a lift. Fine or fragile lashes limit the weight and number of extensions it is reasonable to place.
- Eye shape and lid. Hooded lids often hide straight lashes, and a lift reveals them; the curl and length of extensions are also chosen according to the shape of the eye.
If your wish is not realistic for your lashes, we tell you and suggest the closest alternative.
Switching from one to the other
You do not have to choose once and for all. If you wear extensions and want to try a lift, have them removed in the salon first, never pulled off, and give your lashes time to recover if they are weakened. Going the other way is simpler: once a lift has grown out, extensions can be applied to healthy lashes. Lifting on top of extensions, or placing extensions on lashes weakened by repeated lifts, is not something we recommend.
The appointment, step by step
For a lash lift, an appointment slot is 1h15. After a short consultation, your lashes are cleansed, positioned on a silicone shield and processed with a lifting then a setting lotion. A tint can follow, then a nourishing finish. The full process is described on our lash lift page.
For a classic extension set, allow about 1h45 for a new set. Your natural lashes are cleansed and isolated one by one, and an extension is chosen in length and thickness to suit each lash and bonded a little away from the lid. For Russian volume, fans of very fine extensions are made by hand and placed in the same way. See our classic extensions page for details.
In both cases, you lie down with your eyes closed, and many clients doze off.

How to prepare
For both treatments: arrive with clean, bare lashes, with no mascara and no oily make-up remover. Remove contact lenses for the treatment. Tell us about any allergy, eye condition or recent treatment. If you have ever reacted to a cosmetic product, hair dye or adhesive, ask for a patch test when you book.
For a lift: stop any lash growth serum at least seven days before. It leaves a film that stops the products working evenly. If you are wearing extensions, have them removed professionally first.
For extensions: avoid oily creams around the eyes on the day, and plan your first 24 hours without steam or long exposure to water. If you have never worn extensions, a discovery set is an easy way to see whether you like them.
The first weeks, week by week
| Period | Lash lift | Classic extensions |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | No water, steam, sauna, pool or eye make-up for 24 hours; the curl looks strong | Avoid water and steam for 24 hours; lashes look full and dark straight away |
| Days 2–7 | The curl softens into a natural lift; mascara allowed again | Cleanse regularly with an oil-free cleanser; brush gently every morning |
| Weeks 2–3 | Nothing to do except brush and nourish | A few natural lashes shed with their extension; a 2-week refill keeps the line full |
| Weeks 3–4 | The lift stays in place | A 3–4 week refill rebuilds the thinner areas |
| Weeks 6–8 | The curl fades gradually as new lashes grow; time for the next lift | Refills continue at your chosen rhythm; past four weeks, a new set is often better value |
Aftercare for each option
After a lash lift, the first 24 hours are the most important: no water, steam, sauna, pool, eye make-up or rubbing. Then, brush your lashes gently, sleep on your back for the first nights if you can, and use a nourishing serum as advised.
With extensions, the rules last as long as you wear them:
- only oil-free cleansers and make-up removers around the eyes, or the adhesive weakens;
- no mascara on the extensions and no mechanical curler;
- do not rub, pull or pick at your lashes, the first cause of premature loss and broken natural lashes;
- sleep on your back if you can, to reduce friction on the pillow;
- have them removed in the salon: the adhesive only dissolves with a professional gel.
In both cases, contact a doctor or pharmacist if you notice swelling, spreading redness, intense itching or eye pain.
Duration, refills and prices
A lash lift generally lasts six to eight weeks and fades gradually, with no regrowth line. At our studio, a Lash Lift is CHF 75 and a Korean Lash Lift CHF 85.
Extensions last as long as you maintain them. A classic set needs a refill every two to four weeks, and the price depends on the interval, because a later refill requires more rebuilding. For comparison over the same six to eight weeks: a lift is one appointment at CHF 75, while a classic set means a new set at CHF 130 followed by refills, for example two refills at three to four weeks at CHF 95 each. Packages of three identical services come with a discount of at least 20 percent. Here are our classic extension prices (the full menu, including Russian volume, is on our service prices page):

Conclusion: start with a consultation
If your normal lashes are long but straight, and you want a fresh, easy look, a lash lift is very often the better answer. If your lashes are short or sparse, or you want real length and density, extensions will give you what a lift cannot, as long as you are ready for the refills and the routine. You can also alternate between the two over the year, as long as extensions are removed professionally before a lift. The best way to decide is to let us look at your lashes: in a few minutes, we can tell you honestly what each option would give you, and which one we would choose in your place.
